Mariyinsky Palace (Explore #194)
renaissance
Mariyinsky Palace (Ukrainian: Маріїнський палац, Mariyins’kyi palats) is an official ceremonial residence of the President of Ukraine in Kiev and adjoins the neo-classical building of the Verkhovna Rada (parliament) of Ukraine. It is a picturesque Baroque palace on the hilly bank of the Dnieper River.

The palace was requested to be constructed in 1744 by the Russian Empress Elizaveta Petrovna, and was designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the most famous architect working in the Russian empire at that time. One of the students of Rastrelli, Ivan Michurin, together with a group of other architects, completed the palace in 1752. Empress Elizabeth, however, did not live long enough to see the palace. The first royal figure to stay in the palace was Empress Catherine II, who visited Kiev in 1787. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries the palace was the main residence of Governors-General.

Tribute To Guitarist Pat Martino – Scan/Edit 03 07

Heard the story of Pat Martino, the guitarist? A Brain Aneurysm caused him to lose his entire memory. He had to relearn music and guitar from scratch. Play the brief audio clip here –
www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5249566

The small, black arrow points to the region of our brain devoted to music appreciation and music-making. I didn’t take this. Clipped from the Ottawa Citizen Newspaper, scanned and edited for uploading.

Here’s a link to the McGill U. lab of Dr. R. Zattore who was featured in the Montreal Gazette feature article from where I got this photo. Any credit for this image should go to Dr. Zattore and his Lab in Montreal, Que. www.zlab.mcgill.ca/home.html

I took this photo at the 2012 Texas Renaissance Festival in Todd’s Mission, TX, near Houston in October 2012. This was the 2nd weekend of the TRF and it featured a fairy theme,

The TRF is huge – you really need two days to take it in – there are stage acts, performers, jousts, belly and Brazilian dancers, chain mail models, and pirates everywhere you look – but the best part for me is just walking around people watching – it is incredible. There are so many people in elaborate costumes that my neck hurt from constantly looking in all directions – and they didn’t mind me shooting them. What a blast – this is something I’m really looking forward too each year.

Renaissance Fairs are a great place to see a whole bunch of people in period outfits – either as performers, cast members, vendors, or ordinary lay people that like the spirit of the Ren Fairs and show up as Faces in the Crowd. I’m a Ren Fair fan and I was fortunate to visit the Minnesota Ren Fair in Shakopee, MN, in September 2011. This set includes people that caught my attention and fall into one of the categories listed above – hopefully I labeled them correctly. If you’re in the Minnesota area, you should check this Fair out – it is a photographers dream.
